The ditched letters were found on Reservoir Road in the town and were supposed to be delivered to ten streets throughout Cardwell Bay, the Greenock Telegraph reports.

One local brought the mail to his home and immediately contacted Royal Mail.

An area manager became involved in the situation and someone came to collect the abandoned post.

The resident told The Telegraph: “By chance, we happened to notice a bundle of mail, still held together by a rubber band used by Royal Mail, inside a public bin on the pavement.

“There could be important letters in there, including bills.”

He slammed Royal Mail for the service he and others in the area have faced with getting their post.

The man added: “My concern is that dumping the mail, our mail, in a bin, might be considered acceptable practice within Royal Mail.

“Living on Reservoir Road for 25 years myself and my neighbours have over the years experienced what can only be described as a shoddy postal service, with mail routinely being put through the wrong letterboxes, not receiving mail during the week and receiving it all on a Saturday, and anticipated mail never arriving. “

Royal Mail bosses have since suspended a worker and launched a probe into the incident.

A spokesperson said: “An employee has been suspended as a precautionary measure while a thorough investigation is carried out.

“The recovered mail was delivered as addressed by Monday 2 October.”
