Six firefighter crews were called to a sorting office in Chelmsford this morning following reports of a postal worker suffering a rash from an unknown substance.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) were called to the site on Winsford Way, Boreham, just before 6.30am this morning. Several ambulances and police cars also attended the scene and the mail centre was evacuated.

A specialist unit is now trying to identify the substance. A spokesperson for Royal Mail said the employee developed the ‘mild’ rash after touching the substance as they handled a parcel.

The spokesperson said the worker had no other serious symptoms and was seen on site by an ambulance, along with other employees. They added: ‘We have launched an immediate investigation into the incident.’

A search of the sorting office has now been concluded by firefighters, with the crews leaving the scene. Evacuated workers have been able to go back inside the depot.

A spokesperson for ECFRS told Metro.co.uk the incident had been a ‘false alarm’. The crews attending were from Chelmsford, Great Baddow, Harlow, and Maldon.

East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that five employees were seen by paramedics and ‘discharged at the scene’.

They said: ‘An ambulance, two ambulance officer vehicles and three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles were called to the Royal Mail  centre at Winsford Way, Boreham shortly after 6am today following reports that  a number of people had come into contact with a chemical substance.’
