Royal Mail depot in Lewisham could be bulldozed for homes

A Royal Mail depot could be bulldozed to make way for new South London flats.

Developers have submitted plans to demolish part of the Blackheath Delivery Office and build nine homes.

A three-storey block of flats containing six apartments would be built on the site of the former Royal Mail depot under the proposals.

Another three homes would be created through the extension and conversion of the next door Post Office building’s first floor.

The-ex Royal Mail sorting office on the site would be turned into a nursery under the plans submitted to Lewisham Council.

Blackheath Village Post Office will continue to operate out of the ground floor of the Post Office building.

Planning documents read: “The new residential block on the eastern side of the scheme will provide six new apartments. The first floor of the existing Post Office shop will be converted to residential, with a single storey roof extension proposed, to provide a total of three  residential units.

“The nursery is proposed to be operated by N Family Club, which is a well respected nursery operator that provides high-quality care for early years within the UK.

Provision for 821m2 of nursery floor space is to be gained through the conversion of the basement and ground floor of the former Royal Mail sorting office.”

The two floors will house four baby rooms, two toddler rooms, a kitchen, an office and meeting room, as well as storage space for bikes and buggies.

The nursery is expected to have room for up to 133 children and open from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday.

None of the planned flats will be affordable as the number of planned homes is below the minimum limit at which builders must include affordable homes in a development, according to council rules.

Royal Mail shut down the Blackheath Delivery Office in March 2022. Since then, the nearest delivery office for locals wanting to collect parcels has been the Charlton and Greenwich Delivery Office.
