Royal Mail, DreamWorks Collab Marks 100 Years of Rupert Bear

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Rupert Bear, Royal Mail, DreamWorks Animation and Universal Brand Development have launched a set of illustrated stamps.

The Royal Mail and DreamWorks has launched a new range of stamps featuring four pairs of illustrated commemorative images by Alfred Bestall, who wrote and illustrated more than 270 Rupert Bear stories after he took over from the character’s first illustrator Mary Tourtel in 1935.

Created in 1920, Rupert Bear is Britain’s longest continually published comic strip after first appearing in the Daily Express in the November of that year.

“We celebrate the 100th birthday of Rupert, one of the most-loved characters in children’s literature,” says Phillip Parker, head, stamp strategy, Royal Mail. “He has introduced successive generations of children to a wonderful make-believe world of magic and adventure.

The Rupert Bear stamps join other recent Royal Mail collections that celebrated well-known brands such as “Tomb Raider.”
