Royal Mail driver secretly leaves toy lorry on bridge for boy who waves at traffic

A Royal Mail driver has impressed everyone with an absolutely heartwarming gesture for a man who often waves to them as they drive by.

27-year-old Alex Chesters, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, likes to go to Ash Flats Lane bridge near Stafford so he can watch and wave at the traffic as it journeys down the M6.

Because of his condition, Alex is completely reliant on his family, and his dad Darren says his son is somebody who can find happiness in the smallest of things.

Alex enjoys going to the bridge two or three times a week with his dad, and is a particular fan of the Royal Mail lorries as they drive by, because red is his favourite colour.

The wonderful gesture was revealed in a Facebook post from Darren, who explained that when they go to wave at the traffic ‘some [people] wave back or beep their horns’ – but this time they found something else waiting for them.

Posting the pictures to Facebook, Darren revealed that he and son Alex had found a toy Royal Mail lorry tied to the bridge with a message addressed to them.

They had gone up onto the bridge on Saturday (17 September) when they discovered the present of a bright red Royal Mail lorry waiting there for them.

Addressed to ‘the dad and lad who watch the trucks’, it turned out that one of the drivers had spotted Alex waving from the bridge and put the model Royal Mail lorry up there as a gift for him.

It read: “I drive for Royal Mail and see you and your lad regularly and thought he might like his own, have a nice day!”

Darren’s post soon went viral, racking up more than 90,000 likes as so many people were touched by the kind-hearted gesture.

Darren explained that the lovely gesture had brought them so much joy, as he thanked the kind-hearted driver for going the extra mile to say thank you to Alex for waving.

He said: “I cried when I saw it and Alex was chuffed. I can’t believe someone has been that kind and thought to make Alex’s day even better, it’s amazing.

“He never asks for anything apart from going on the bridge. It makes his day and to me it’s part of his education because we are doing colours and identifying which vehicle it is.

“His kindness has gone above and beyond. It’s restored my faith in humanity.”

Royal Mail has since said they are in touch with Alex’s family and are trying to arrange for him to visit them so he can get a closer look at the lorries.
