Royal Mail has been hit with the double blow of an official investigation into its failure to meet delivery targets and the threat of strike action that threatens to throw the service into “chaos”.
Ofcom, Britain’s communications regulator, said it wanted to understand why Royal Mail has had a “substantial lapse in performance”.
The postal service said this month it did not meet delivery targets for its 2021-22 financial year. It blamed disruption caused by the pandemic.
The investigation was launched as Unite, the union, said it would ballot members on strike action over cuts to frontline delivery staff. It said its proposed industrial action could cause “letter and parcel delivery chaos”.
