Royal Mail has announced the last dates people should be sending post to ensure it arrives in time for Christmas.
As the festive season begins, shops will start to get busier and delivery services will be working hard with an influx of post. The added pressure of ongoing Royal Mail strikes could also affect the efficiency of deliveries this year.
And the Post Office is urging people to send parcels and cards early to ‘avoid the rush’. It is recommending that post being sent second-class should be sent by December 19 latest and those using first-class should send them by December 21.

Plenty of time should be allowed for posting, especially people relying on International deliveries. Below are the latest dates recommended for all Royal Mail deliveries:
- Royal Mail Bulk Economy send by Friday, December 16.
- Royal Mail second-class and second-class signed for send by Monday, December 19.
- Royal Mail first-class and first-class signed for and Parcelforce Worldwide express48 and express48large send by Wednesday, December 21. (express48large is only available in certain Post Office branches)
- Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed and Parcelforce Worldwide express24 and expressAM send by Thursday, December 22.
- Royal Mail Special Delivery by 1pm with Saturday Guarantee send by Friday, December 23.
The Post Office website says: “Get your cards, gifts and greetings there in time for Christmas. Check the latest recommended posting dates for all UK and international services as some international dates are earlier than last year.
“As always, our advice is to post early and avoid the rush.”
