Royal Mail Great Barr Post Office to shut temporarily as move plans delayed

Royal Mail customers are fuming at the ‘terrible news’ their Post Office will be shut temporarily. The move comes following a delay in relocation plans for Great Barr Post Office on Newtown Road.

The office was set to relocate to Cross Lane, however Royal Mail revealed the move is now delayed due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’. According to an announcement on their official website, the Great Barr Post Office will now temporarily close on March 20 at 5.30pm.

In an updated information letter posted on March 10, Royal Mail said: “Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances there will be a delay to our plans to relocate the branch and regrettably, the current branch will need to close before the move to the new location is completed.

“Therefore there will now be a temporary closure period from Monday 20 March 2023 at 17:30. We would like to assure you that we are working hard to keep this period of closure to a minimum.

“The provision of a Post Office service to our customers in Great Barr is important to us and we are working hard to restore a service to the community as soon as possible. Further information will be provided in due course once the opening date has been finalised.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause locally.”

The new site promises to be refurbished with a modern, open plan environment and longer opening hours. Despite consultations taking place, Great Barr residents have expressed anger over the news.

On a neighbourhood Facebook page, one user wrote: “This is terrible news as it means we will be without a Post Office for a while, and vindicates many of the concerns people raised during the ‘consultation’.”

Another user wrote: “Disgusting why move it?? We wanted it left where it was easily accessible.”

Another shared: “Appalling , they never listened or read any of our concerns. They had already decided to move it before consulting.”

However some supported the move, one user said: “It’s just temporary. If you drive, Bowstoke Post Office is fine – at least we can park up close by and deal with your posting requirements easily.”
