Royal Mail Head issues a union appeal while company’s costs remain ‘under review.’

• As Royal Mail is faced with strikes, Simon Thompson uses an interview with Ian King Live to press his case for a settlement with the CWU, threatening to open up a new front in what one union claimed this week might become a “summer of discontent.”
• Unions are also opposing any cost-cutting initiatives that could affect their respective memberships.

Royal Mail Head told that the company is keeping rates “under review” as expenses rise across the board and that unions planning to strike must realize the “changes that are required so we can compete in the market.”

Simon Thompson spoke as the corporation faces objections to its modernization plans across the board, with Unite now polling managers on potential job cuts.

The Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) is also threatening industrial action but over pay.

The cost of living crisis has triggered a slew of requests in the private sector for salary increases to keep pace with inflation, which is presently running at 9%.

Unions are also opposing any cost-cutting initiatives that could affect their respective memberships.

The CWU, which represents 115,000 postal workers at Royal Mail, has led strikes at so-called royal Post Offices in recent months and is also balloting workers at BT in a fight over pay.

It charges Royal Mail with profiteering at the expense of its customers.
