Royal Mail is urging its customers to send in their flyers earlier than usual if they want to be out in time for Christmas.
The company is under pressure from the workers, who will take part in an industrial strike in the run-up to Christmas. It has issued an update on recommended posting dates for international and domestic mail, taking into account the impact of a strike planned by members of the Communications Workers union on December 9, 11, 14, 15, 23 and 24.

The changes were implemented to help move mail around at a time of year when mail usage is higher than normal. It comes after Royal Mail said it would continue to publish contingency plans in the face of the strike.

Nick Landon, Royal Mail’s chief commercial officer, said: “The CWU is emerging at our busiest time, holding Christmas at Ransom for our customers, businesses and families across the country. We apologize to our customers for any disruption and delay caused by the CWU strike. We ask our customers to post early for Christmas to help us deliver Christmas.”

Royal Mail is now suggesting that customers who use second class send their parcels and letters by December 12 while first class users must use the service by December 16. Being busier at post office branches as customers race to take advantage of cheaper postage as this is now the recommended last date for second-class parcels to arrive at Christmas.
Once you have your package ready, don’t wait for it to come to the branch and get it in the mail – many Post Office branches are open long hours and some are open seven days a week, so visit your local branch and send your gifts in time for Christmas.”
CWU members take action as part of a long-running dispute over wages, jobs, and conditions.
CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said last week: “Royal Mail chiefs risk Christmas collapse because of their stubborn refusal to treat their staff with respect.
Postal workers want to continue serving the communities they belong to, delivering Christmas gifts and handling the backlog from recent weeks.
But they know their worth and will not meekly accept the casualization of their jobs, the ruin of their conditions and the impoverishment of their families.

“This can be resolved if Royal Mail starts treating its workers with respect and meets with the union to resolve this dispute.”
