Royal Mail Issues New Stamp Designs To Mark 50 Years Of UK Pride

Royal Mail is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first Pride rally by issuing a set of eight stamps from NB Studio and illustrator Sofie Birkin.

’A March Through Time’ pays tribute to rallies over the decades, from protest gatherings in 1972 through to the present day where the event has morphed into a celebratory carnival open to all members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Birkin utilizes a panoramic stamp format to reflect the idea of a timeline, upon which a vibrant riot of free-flowing color reflects the energy and passion presented by Pride marchers irrespective of the decade they happen to be alive in.

The vibrant visuals are brought further to life by Animade, which have animated the core designs for social media to draw audiences deeper into the picture. The painstakingly hand-drawn frame-by-frame provides the viewer with the closest experience of a Pride march without actually being there.

Alan Dye, creative director and owner at NB Studio, said: “What we loved about Sofie’s work was her ability to portray a narrative through her lovely free-flowing style. Watching these beautiful illustrations come to life, you could easily imagine yourself as part of the ‘March Through Time’.“

Illustrator Sofie Birkin added: “As a queer, Essex-born artist, it feels incredibly meaningful to represent 50 years of my own community fighting for, protecting and celebrating our right to exist and be seen, especially through an institution as storied as the Royal Mail.”

The stamps are supported by a presentation pack, coin cover, hand stamps, filler card and first-day cover for collectors, all developed by NB Studio.

Royal Mail joins a growing number of brands putting Pride strategies in place to express their commitment to and celebration of the LGBTQ+ community.
