From scorching hot summer days to the depths of winter, postal workers play a vital role delivering the country’s mail – and the Royal Mail has a range of vacancies open right now.

You could apply to join the teams at Melksham and Swindon Delivery Offices and become a postperson on the road. But if you don’t fancy popping those letters through letterboxes of homes across Wiltshire, there are other options.

The Royal Mail is also looking for technicians to help keep its fleet of vehicles on the road. And if you’re just starting out, there’s an opportunity to become an apprentice technician, with pay rises each year and on-the-job training.

Swindon

Royal Mail Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Technician

Royal Mail has some 50,000 vehicles – including 6,000 HGVs – across the UK. Its vehicle technicians handle everything from routine servicing to major component rebuilds and vehicle modifications all while keeping up with rapidly changing vehicle technology including electric vehicles. Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Technicians learn through on-the-job training and classroom learning over three years.

Royal Mail is looking for individuals with a flair for mechanics and engineering and the potential to become automotive experts. The starting salary is £13,129 to £20,063, depending on age and location, rising in each year of the programme up to a minimum of £27,801 a year on completion.

Heavy Vehicle Technician, Swindon workshop

Royal Mail is looking for professional vehicle technicians to perform a full range of inspections, diagnosis, maintenance and repair procedures on a range of vehicle, trailers and mechanical equipment operated by Royal Mail Group. It says it is looking for a team player who takes real pride in their work and is prepared to go the extra mile to ensure the job is done effectively.

Successful candidates must be fully qualified to at least advanced level (IMI Level 3 in Heavy vehicle maintenance & repair or an equivalent qualification). They must also have proven experience on their CV of working on a wide range of vehicles, for example LGV.

The job has a basic salary of £29,411 per annum plus a fleet allowance of £641.76 per annum and a shift allowance of £45.80 per week when working 1.30pm-9.30pm. A Royal Mail Technician can expect to earn £31,242 per annum excluding overtime.

Postperson (with driving), Swindon Delivery Office

Royal Mail is looking for a postperson to work part-time hours between 12noon and 6pm and cover periods of leave for a fixed number of routes. You will need to sort the mail for your route, join a colleague for your round and spend between four and six hours delivering mail outdoors.

A full UK manual driving licence with no more than six penalty points is essential, but a clean licence is preferred. The role is for 30 hours a week but overtime may be available. The hourly rate for this role is £8.44 for 17-year-olds and £10.85 for those aged 18 and over.

Marlborough

Cleaning operative, Marlborough Delivery Office

Cleaning operatives will be responsible for variety of tasks including mopping, toilet cleaning, washing walls, vacuuming, emptying bins, dusting and sanitising surfaces safely and professionally to a high standard. The permanent job is part time, seven hours and 15 Minutes per week, from 9:30am until 10:45am Monday-Friday and 9-10am on Saturday.

The pay for this role is £9.50 per hour. Benefits include 20 days annual leave plus bank holidays, rising to 25 days with service (pro rata), uniform, PPE, employee referral scheme and defined contribution pension scheme along with car parking.

Multi-site cleaner, Marlborough Delivery Office

As a multi-site cleaner you will be responsible for several post codes including Marlborough, working 19 hours between 8am and 1pm from Monday-Saturday. Tasks will include mopping, toilet cleaning, washing walls, vacuuming, emptying bins, dusting and sanitising surfaces safely and professionally to a high standard.

Previous cleaning experience is desired, but not essential. The ideal candidate will be “naturally friendly”, with good written and verbal communication skills. Pay is £9.50 an hour.

Melksham

Postperson (with driving), Melksham Delivery Office

A postperson is needed to join the team working from Melsham Delivery Office. The ideal candidate will be upbeat and self-motivated and happy working solo as well as part of a team.

The hours for this role are part-time hours between 8am and 8.30pm, five days a week between Monday and Sunday. You will also cover periods of leave for a fixed number of routes.

You will need to sort the mail for your route, join a colleague for your round and spend between four and six hours delivering mail outdoors. The hourly rate for this role is £8.44 for 17-year-olds and £10.85 for those aged 18 and over.
