Royal Mail jobs on offer as part of Christmas recruitment drive

Royal Mail is hiring temporary Christmas Casuals in order to help them during the busiest time of the year.

The Christmas period is traditionally a very busy time for the postal service, as it sees a huge increase in parcels and letters coming through its sorting office.

Because of this it needs “a few thousand” extra staff in order to help “deliver Christmas to everyone in the UK”.

Each of the Royal Mail centres are offering a range of shifts, from early and late ones to nights and weekends.

A job advertisement for the role says that applicants will be working just like “Mr and Mrs Claus” in helping to bring the festive season to people, and that the hours will be “flexible and adaptable”.

Those who are given the job will help to unload mail and parcels from vans, move them around the warehouse and sort them.

Sometimes a million items can be sorted per shift.

The pay for the Christmas Casuals role ranges from £8.72 p/h to £9.40 p/h.

The job criteria is:

• You enjoy working to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Being proactive and detailed focused is key
• You are flexible and adaptable to work on various tasks during a shift
• You are able to push trolleys (up to 250kgs) and lift and move mail bags up to 11kg
• Standing for long periods is comfortable for you
• No previous experience is needed – don’t worry, we love new people
• If you do have experience in warehouse or sorting work, with the likes of Amazon or another distribution company, then you are definitely on our wish-list too.

The job advertisement says: “Here at Royal Mail, Christmas is our busiest time of year. With so many parcels and letters coming through our warehouse doors, it’s no surprise that we need a few thousand extra helping hands to get everything where it needs to go.

“That’s why, every year, we hire temporary Mail Centre workers from all different walks of life to help us deliver Christmas across the UK.

“Just like Mr & Mrs Claus, you will help to deliver Christmas to everybody in the UK! Flexible and adaptable at all times, you will be doing a very important job.

“You’ll be helping us unload mail and parcels from our vans, moving them around our warehouses and then sorting them so they arrive at their destination safely – sometimes sorting over a million items in a single shift with your team!”
