Since her history-making victory in the Magnolia Cup at Goodwood, Khadijah Mellah has been the woman of the moment and has found a rather famous fan to add to an already significant club.
The 18-year-old, who partnered the Charlie Fellowes-trained Haverland to success this month when becoming the first person in Britain to race while wearing a hijab, received a congratulatory letter from the Duchess of Cornwall, having met the royal earlier in the year.
The letter said: “Many congratulations on your magnificent win at Goodwood last week! It is a huge achievement to scoop the Magnolia Cup – especially after only four months of race training.”
The Duchess of Cornwall, who part-owns the exciting novice hurdler Pacify and saw Carntop finish second in the Listed Derby Trial at Lingfield in 2016, seemed particularly taken with Mellah’s prowess in the saddle, adding that she was looking forward to her future rides.
“It was a great pleasure to meet you at the Ebony Horse Club reception in July. Little did I know then that I was shaking hands with a future champion jockey…”
Mellah, who had been studying for her A-Levels while training for the Magnolia Cup, previously hinted about taking out an amateur licence. Could she one day ride in the royal silks?
