Royal Mail London postie jobs: How much it pays and how long you’ll have to walk

You might get a bit annoyed if the postie comes a bit late one day or if they don’t deliver your parcel when you’re sure you were in, but have you ever really thought about what the job is like?

You might see the postman out and about in the rain and pity them, or walking around on a glorious sunny day and envy them but that’s about it.

What’s it really like to be a postman or woman? How far do you have to walk? What’s the pay like?

Well, there’s some Royal Mail jobs in London open at the moment, so take a look below to see if you think it’s something you could do.

There are hundreds of other jobs and opportunities available all the time at our official jobs partner  Fish4Jobs.

Postperson with driving – Kilburn Delivery Office

Contract type: Fixed Term Temporary until 27/06/21

Hours: 30 hours, between 6am and 2pm, 5 days per week (Monday – Saturday)

Pay: If you’re 18+ it’s £13.12 an hour, at 17 it’s £10.20. You’ll also get pay rises every sixth months.

How long do you have to walk for?

Each shift is six hours long – at an average pace that will mean you cover around 18.6 miles – but sometimes you’ll only actually be delivering post for four hours.

The shift times vary, and you’ll start any time between 6am and 2pm, and finish between 2pm and 8pm.

What kind of person does the Royal Mail want?

Given you are going to be walking for so long you need to be pretty fit – and you’ll no doubt get even fitter once you’ve started the job.

The description asks that you’re happy and upbeat, and are happy to work solo or as part of a team.

You’ll also need to have good organisation skills so you can sort the post for your route and make sure you plan your walk well, ensuring you complete the deliveries in good time.

As you’ll be driving as part of the role you need a full driving licence with no more than six penality points – but clean is preferred.
