Royal Mail looking for Christmas workers with salaries up to £17 an hour

Christmas is a time of giving, which also makes it a time when parcels zip up and down the country. To meet high demand at its busiest time of year, Royal Mail is looking to recruit new staff over the Christmas period.

The company is looking to recruit mail sorters in Essex, who will be playing a “key role in delivering Christmas to the nation”.

Royal Mail said: “Every Christmas at Royal Mail, we deliver festive cheer to communities all across the nation, but in order to do that, we need some extra pairs of hands.

“The festive period is our busiest time of year, and without our seasonal workers, delivering the magic of Christmas wouldn’t be possible. Whether it’s the Christmas card from a loved one or the gift they’ve always wanted, we deliver more than mail.”

There are mail sorting jobs in both Chelmsford and Romford which offer flexible shifts, as well as onsite canteen facilities, breakout areas and access to a subsidised gym. Employees in Chelmsford can work on late shifts from two in the afternoon to ten at night, night shifts from ten at night to six in the morning or early morning shifts from six in the morning until two in the afternoon.

Depending on the shifts, employees at the Chelmsford Mail Centre can earn between £12.29 and £14.81 per hour. In Romford only late and night shifts are available, with those on nights making £17.10 an hour.

The job application says: “Working at the heart of our team as one of our Seasonal Mail Sorters, you’ll play a key role in delivering Christmas to the nation. You’ll unload mail and parcels from our vans, move them through our centres, and help sort letters.

“Helping us to deliver more for our customers is important, it’s a hands-on role, ensuring every parcel, letter and present reaches their destination, safely.” While applicants don’t need to have worked for Royal Mail before, warehouse experience is an “extra gift”.

As well as these positions, the company is hiring across Essex with jobs ranging from cleaning staff to vehicle technicians. Vacancies are available in Chelmsford, Colchester, Thurrock and more.
