Royal Mail managers announce strike against ‘savage’ plans to cut 700 jobs and pay

ROYAL MAIL managers are fighting back against “savage” plans to axe 700 jobs and slash pay by up to £7,000 by launching industrial action next week.

Their union Unite announced today that following an overwhelming vote for strikes last month, 2,400 managers will engage in “work to rule” action, refusing to complete tasks outside their contract or undertake unpaid overtime, between July 15 and 19. 

A three-day walkout will then begin on July 20, the union confirmed on Tuesday.

Unite said its members had “no other option” but to act after months of consultations failed to persuade bosses at the business, which is “awash with cash,” to change course.

In 2021, the privatised company paid out £400 million to shareholders and recorded profit of £311m, according to the union.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said the cuts were “being driven entirely by a culture of greed and profiteering which has seized a 500-year-old essential service, driving it close to ruin.”  

The firm has said it was “disappointed” by the action and accused Unite of “misleading” its members over the dispute.
