Royal Mail must listen to Derry workers and residents – Derry Daily

Members of the Derry City and Strabane Council Business and Culture Committee unanimously agreed to support People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin’s proposal to meet with Royal Mail management and the Communication Workers Union to address concerns raised consistently by workers and residents regarding delayed mail delivery and unfair working conditions.

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin said: “Royal Mail bosses are not taking concerns raised by their workers and residents seriously.

“I welcome the unanimous support in Council for my proposal for meetings with Royal Mail and the CWU.

“The late delivery of mail is a very serious issue causing distress for residents waiting on appointments, housing offers and much else.

“The working conditions for Royal Mail staff are also a serious concern. Workers are clearly under unfair pressure and management doesn’t appear to be proactively addressing the issues that have been raised with them.

“I, along with other elected representatives, were previously given assurances by Royal Mail management that these very concerns were being addressed.

“It appears to me that company bosses are focused on maximising profits at all costs. This is what happens when public services are privatised.

“Ofcom, the regulatory authority, has completely failed in its oversight role. The regulator is complicit with Royal Mail’s ripping up of its public responsibility to pursue rampant profiteering.

“Royal Mail has made it clear that Ofcom greenlighted their failure to adhere to the universal service obligation.

“Royal Mail workers and their trade union, the CWU, have constructive proposals on how to address the problems and the need for investment into Derry mail facilities.

“I believe this is who we need to listen to and get behind if we want fair treatment for residents and workers.”
