Postmen could check up on vulnerable people as part of their rounds under plans being drawn up by Royal Mail.
The new service is due to be trialled in Northumberland and could be expanded nationally as part of a new Royal Mail Health division, which aims to cash in on the growing market for delivering prescription medicine.
Simon Thompson, the Royal Mail chief executive, said: “We’re exploring opportunities so that posties can check on vulnerable people. Because we go everywhere, every day, our great, trusted team sees things that others don’t.”
