Royal Mail PLC opens electric delivery office ahead of COP26

Royal Mail has opened an all-electric delivery office in Glasgow ahead of the COP26 Climate Summit that starts next week.

The G51 office in Govan, across the river from where COP26 is due to be held, will have 13 fully electric collection and delivery vehicles replacing existing diesel vans.

Two micro electric vehicles will also be joining the fleet in Glasgow.

These micro electric vehicles are roughly the size of a golf buggy or a quad bike, with a load size of between 1.2 and 2 cubic metres.

“They have the capacity to accommodate more than an average daily round’s worth of letters and small parcels,” said the postal group.

Royal Mail added that it already has the lowest reported CO2e emissions per parcel amongst major UK delivery companies, with an additional 3,000 electric vehicles rolling out across the country.

As part of its efforts to boost its green credentials, Royal Mail has also introduced a new type of low-emission tyres on its delivery vans and trialled the use of drones to deliver Covid-19 kits to remote locations.
