Under its long-term plan, the Royal Mail is looking to lower its carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions from 205g per parcel to 50g per parcel.
As well as reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% by 2025-2026, it also aims to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 25% between 202-21 and 2030, for which it has applied for independent verification from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
In addition to adopting renewable electricity at many of its sites, the organisation is also switching to low emission or zero emission vehicles such as EV’s and biogas-powered trucks.
Last year, the Royal Mail boosted its low carbon fleet with 29 biogas trucks.
Other initiatives include using telemetry technologies to improve distribution through route optimisation. This works by collecting data to create an advanced analytics model that could increase efficiency through the entire supply chain.
Such advances have been seen throughout the bulk gas distribution sectors, with consulting specialist McKinsey revealing that advanced models could have the ability to use real-time data to update trucking routes.
