Royal Mail preps for Christmas by pledging to hire 20,000 temporary workers

Covering Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas, the extra workers will help ensure millions of packages get to their destination

Sending parcels around Christmas is notoriously busy. With millions of packages flying around the country, figuring out the last possible date to send gifts before Christmas, and waiting for presents to be shipped from sellers, it’s no wonder the Royal Mail is put to the test. But this year seeks to be different.

Royal Mail has announced its commitment to ensuring efficient delivery during the holiday season. The company revealed today that it will be hiring 20,000 temporary workers to assist with the transportation, sorting, and delivery of the increased volume of parcels and mail expected during this festive period.

These seasonal employees will help sort the rising number of online shopping orders before they are delivered to Royal Mail’s 1,200 Delivery Offices.

The available positions include 12,000 roles in mail centres across England, 2,000 in Scotland, 600 in Wales, and 400 in Northern Ireland. The temporary roles will be located in two parcel hubs, four seasonal parcel sorting centres, and 37 mail centres nationwide, offering a variety of shifts to meet different scheduling needs.

Additionally, there are 3,000 delivery and collection roles available across the country, along with 2,000 temporary HGV and MGV driver roles.

Royal Mail Interim Chief Operating Officer, Jamie Stephenson, said: “As we do every year, we will be pulling out all the stops to make Christmas special for our customers. It’s the busiest time for us, and we work tirelessly behind the scenes—planning months in advance—to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“From delivering festive parcels to supporting online shopping, we’re investing heavily in extra resources, including thousands of seasonal team members, to help make sure every delivery arrives on time and with care.”

Seasonal roles will be available from late October to early January 2026. This period includes peak times such as Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and especially the month of December. Parcelforce Worldwide is also looking to hire additional drivers and indoor workers.

The company encourages individuals seeking extra income during the festive season to apply and join the Royal Mail teams across the UK in delivering Christmas packages to customers. No prior experience is required, and flexible shift work is available.

To support this year’s seasonal campaign, the company will expand its fleet, which currently consists of 48,200 vehicles, including 7,000 electric vehicles (EVs). They will add 6,800 hire vans and employ over 1,200 road haulage contractors to help transport festive mail and parcels nationwide.

Royal Mail boasts the largest network of parcel collection points to make sending, collecting, and returning parcels as convenient as possible for customers. There are nearly 24,000 locations, which include 2,000 lockers, 7,800 Collect+ shops, 11,500 Post Office branches, 1,200 Royal Mail Customer Service Points, and 1,400 parcel postboxes.
