Royal Mail proposes pause to strike action

In the face of industrial action in the coming peak season, Royal Mail has asked the Communications Workers Union (CWU) to withdraw its threat. If the CWU does so the management will enter into discussions with the union without preconditions.

At the same time, Royal Mail will extend the life of the ballot results by the same amount of time as the pause on industrial action. These preconditions of talks are so service is not impacted in what would otherwise be a bumper Christmas peak season for the postal operator.

Just because a union has balloted for industrial action there is no guarantee it will call for strikes.

Ricky McAulay, Royal Mail National Service Delivery Director said: “If the CWU agrees to rule out industrial action for the remainder of the calendar year – a critical time for our customers, we will commit to holding open discussions with no preconditions aimed at resolving the dispute.”
