Royal Mail recruiting hundreds of new staff ahead of Christmas rush

Royal Mail are recruiting hundreds of people ahead of the Christmas rush over the next few months.

The postal service are currently looking for Christmas casual staff at their Warrington and Chester mail centres, with vacancies at their Liverpool centres predicted to open up soon.

Both centres are looking for Christmas processing postal staff to work over a range of shifts.

In an online job posting says: “Here at Royal Mail , Christmas is our busiest time of year. With so many parcels and letters coming through our warehouse doors, it’s no surprise that we need a few thousand extra helping hands to get everything where it needs to go.

“That’s why, every year, we hire temporary mail centre workers from all different walks of life to help us deliver Christmas across the UK.

“Just like Mr and Mrs Claus, you will help to deliver Christmas to everybody in the UK! Flexible and adaptable at all times, you will be doing a very important job.


“You’ll be helping us unload mail and parcels from our vans, moving them around our warehouses and then sorting them so they arrive at their destination safely – sometimes sorting over a million items in a single shift with your team!”

At both centres, the typical shifts they have available are are earlies (working 6am to 2pm), lates ( working 2pm to 10pm), and nights (working 10pm to 6am) plus weekend shifts working over various hours.

 

There may also be part time shifts available.

Pay rates are £9.50 per hour for days or £11.21 per hour for nights.

The successful applicant needs to have the following skills, according to the online job description:

  • Enjoy working to tight deadlines in a fast paced environment 
  • Being proactive and detailed focused
  • Being flexible and adaptable to work on various tasks during a shift 
  • Be able to push trolleys (up to 250kgs) and stand for long periods
  • No previous experience is needed, but experience in a warehouse or sorting work, with the likes of Amazon or another distribution company, would be beneficial.

On your application, Royal Mail will ask you which shift you would prefer. You will be able to pick from earlies, lates, nights and weekends.

But they are not able to guarantee your preferred shift as shifts are offered on a first come first serve basis, and shift times may change depending of the amount of mail going through the centres.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend a registration event where employers will collect some further information from you, and you will be able to discuss your shift preference.
