Royal Mail says sorry after postboxes taped up for Robbie Williams gig

Royal Mail has apologised to customers – after six of its postboxes were taped up for the Robbie Williams concert. The Burslem pillarboxes had been out of action for a week when the tape was finally removed yesterday.

The security measure was taken before, during and after Saturday’s Robbie Williams gig at Vale Park. The heightened security has surprised traders.

The affected postboxes included one outside Gordon Day Care Nursery, on Moorland Road, and one in front of a High Lane off-licence.

An off-licence worker said: “It was a weird one. The guy who came and did it last week said it was because of the Robbie Williams concert. I don’t know if they thought it was a bomb threat or something. But if they thought it was a bomb threat then surely they would do the bins too but they didn’t.

“I thought they would put something on the box to let people know but they didn’t. The guy who did it just said it was because of the concert but they came last Tuesday and did it, that’s the weird thing.”

Debra Baillie owns Coffee Cup Café behind the postbox on Moorland Road. She said: “I don’t use this mailbox here, I’ve got one near my house.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We closed six postboxes in relation to road closures and security issues that arose from the Robbie Williams concert over the Bank Holiday weekend. These six postboxes re-opened for use on Tuesday. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused to customers by the closure of these postboxes.”

It comes as the postbox near The Leopard remains taped up following the devastating building fire in Burslem town centre in January.

The Royal Mail spokesman added: “Our postbox on Market Place was taken out of service after the building fire. It will re-open once repairs to the building have been completed.”
