Royal Mail staff to stage fresh strike in long-running dispute over pay and conditions

Royal Mail employees will go on strike on Tuesday in a long-running dispute over pay and terms.

Members of the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) will install picket lines outside sorting and delivery offices across the country.

Efforts to break the deadlock continue despite the industrial strike continuing. More strikes are scheduled in the coming weeks.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We continue to hope to enter into talks this week with CWU through Acas to resolve our dispute over the change and payment.

“This is the only way to get a solution and secure the future of Royal Mail and jobs for our people.

A strike spokesman said the strike “has weakened our financial position and threatens the job security of our postman.”

“On Friday 14 October we announced losses of £219 million in the first half of the year. The strikes have weakened our financial situation and threatened the job security of our courier and women.

“To give the talks the best platform to build towards an agreement, we call on the CWU to suspend planned industrial activity.

“The focus must now be on overcoming the difficulties that prevented an agreement. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this ongoing CWU strike will cause.

“We are doing everything we can to reduce delays and keep people, businesses and the country connected.”

The CWU said that Royal Mail members have a non-agreed 2% pay deal imposed on them, at a time when inflation is in double digits.
