Royal Mail stops delivering to Liskeard street due to threat of postie abuse

Royal Mail has told fed-up residents on a once quiet estate that it will no longer be delivering their mail as it can’t guarantee the safety of its posties.

Residents living on the residential street in Liskeard say they are in constant fear of what will happen next due to the erratic behaviour of one nightmare neighbour.

The individual is said to be responsible for a large number of police and fire service call-outs, claims backed up by crime data which shows several crimes reported.

Following a recent incident, Royal Mail wrote to residents to inform that it won’t be delivering there for the time being.

The letter, which has been seen by Cornwall Live, reads: “You may already be aware that a Royal Mail post person was involved in an incident in your area recently.

“As a result a health and safety risk assessment was undertaken and confirmed that the level of risk associated with delivering to your property was unacceptably high due to the threat of further customer abuse.

“Royal Mail will carry out its own further investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident and we will be working with those involved and the local police.

“However, I’m very sorry to advise that, until such a time we can guarantee this, we are unable to access your property and deliver mail safely.”

The letter went on to state that the measure had been put in place to protect staff and residents will able to collect their post at a nearby post office.

One resident living on the street, pointed the finger at one individual for all of the trouble.

He said: “This year has been a nightmare, they are always starting fires outside. We are a small close of houses and that individual has started fire and left us all living in fear. Three neighbours are looking to move.

“It’s getting worse and worse and the emergency services attending are a weekly occurrence. There’s been 37 incidents in our street in the last 12 months and Royal Mail is refusing to deliver to all nine properties.

“It’s a mixture of elderly people and normal working people here and it’s one person causing all the trouble. We’re always on edge.

“We’re woken up at 6am each morning to screaming and shouting and people are petrified of what will happen next. It’s been going on for years.”

The resident went on to add that armed police have even been called to the close.

He added: “They clearly need help but nothing’s getting done. They are a danger to themself and others and we are scared for our children too.”
