Royal Mail strikes: How will Royal Mail Strikes will affect me? Will I still receive parcels? Will Post Offices be shut?

Royal Mail workers are set to strike on Thursday (October 20) which will be fourth strike out of 21 strikes in a long-running dispute over pay and conditions. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said 115,000 members across the UK would walk out in a 24-hour strike on Thursday, starting at 4am BST.

The strikes are taking place as the workers are in a fight against the “biggest ever assault” on jobs, terms and conditions “in the history of Royal Mail”, according to Royal Mail general secretary Dave Ward. The parcel and letter delivering company state that the upcoming strikes will weaken the financial position of Royal Mail.

With the strikes fast approaching, set to continue over the next few months, HertsLive has rounded up the latest information about what Hertfordshire residents should expect during the strikes. Additionally, we aim to answer any questions that residents might have.

The planned industrial protests will include Black Friday week and Cyber Monday, as well as October 25 and November 28. The strikes will result in letters not being delivered and some parcels being delayed causing disruption to Herts residents.

What will still be delivered?

Royal Mail has said:

  • Special Delivery Guaranteed : We will continue to accept, prioritise and deliver as many Special Delivery items as our resources allow during strike action. However, we cannot guarantee delivery of all items by 9:00am or 1:00pm next day. We will therefore suspend the next day guarantee for items sent the day before, during strike action and until our services are back to normal. Customers will not be able to claim compensation for items which are delayed during this period.

  • Tracked 24 (including COVID test kits and medical prescription items) : Tracked 24 items will be treated as a priority for delivery on days when strike action is taking place. However, significantly reduced resources mean there will be a delay to some Tracked 24 items posted the day before, on the day of and in the days immediately after strike action.

What items will not be delivered on strike days?

Royal Mail has said:

  • We will not be delivering letters (with the exception of Special Delivery)

What can Hertfordshire residents do?

  • Post your items as early as possible in advance of the strike dates
  • Continue to post your items at Postboxes or Post Offices, however collections will be less frequent on days when strike action is taking place

What will happen after the strikes?

After industrial action takes place, Royal Mail will be increasing it’s network capacity and using additional resources to assist with getting services back to normal. Collections from business customers, Post Offices and post boxes will resume the day after strike action finishes.

Deliveries will also resume the day after strike action finishes. This will include accelerating the delivery of NHS and healthcare letters and critical Government mailings in the days following strike action.
