Royal Mail suspends operations for Queen’s funeral

In honour of the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Royal Mail is to desist operations all day on Monday 19th September. The UK has been afforded a bank holiday in her honour on the day.

Royal Mail has had a close relationship with the UK monarchy for more than 500 years, since King Henry VIII announced the first postmaster. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth has continued the good relationship with the carrier, amongst other things playing an active role in the selection and approval of stamps – which to be legal tender in the UK must have the Queen’s head on them.

Royal Mail CEO, Simon Thompson said: “We are proud that over the coming days Royal Mail will play an important role in delivering messages of condolence from all around the world to the Royal family. We want to make our customers aware that services will be suspended on the day of the funeral as people come together to honour Her Majesty, after 70 years of exemplary service to the nation and the Commonwealth.”

This comes as the postal operator faces upheaval, both from within its ranks having industrial action and the possibility of a Czech billionaire making a takeover bid. It would remain to be seen if King Charles supports a then-foreign-owned business in the same way as his mother did.
