President Donald Trump’s decision to revoke the tax exemption on low-value parcels imported into the USA has led to these changes. From August 29, parcels worth over $100 (74 pounds) will be subject to tariffs.
However, parcels valued at less than $100 will not be taxed. The new taxes will only apply to goods purchased and sold, exempting items exchanged between relatives and friends.
The British postal service has temporarily suspended delivery to the USA and will introduce a new delivery service from August 28, along with a charge of 50 pence per parcel to cover customs costs in the USA.
‘We have worked hard with American authorities and international partners to adapt our services to the new requirements set by U.S. customs so that consumers and businesses in the UK can continue to use our services.’
Price adjustments ensure that consumers sending gifts worth less than $100 will not have to pay tariffs, and greeting cards can be sent to the USA without any problems.
Changes in tariffs and postal services
Previously, parcels valued up to $800 (593 pounds) imported into the USA were exempt from taxes, but under the new rules, tariffs will be charged based on the country of origin. For example, parcels from the UK will be subject to a 10% tariff, while those from Europe will pay a 15% deduction.
Several countries, such as Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and Austria, have also halted parcel delivery to the USA in preparation for new tariffs. Etsy has suspended purchasing shipping labels for carriers such as Royal Mail and Evri, starting from August 25.
The British postal service has also made additional changes this year, including delivering second-class letters every other day instead of Saturdays to reduce operational costs. Stamp prices were also adjusted in April, with first-class stamps costing £1.70 and second-class stamps costing 87 pence.
Additionally, the cost of sending large first-class letters and small parcels has increased, indicating a series of ongoing changes in the British postal service.
