The Royal Mail has come under fire from residents and elected representatives in Brymbo after failing to replace a village post box that was removed following a road traffic accident.
The post box, previously located at the corner of Coed-y-Felin Road and Green Road, was decommissioned after being “damaged beyond repair” in a collision.
Residents have been directed to nearby post boxes at Brymbo Post Office, the Enterprise Centre, and Plas Dur in Pentre Broughton.
However, these locations require a steep climb of over 100 feet, raising accessibility concerns.
It has led to complaints from local residents who say they feel let down by the Royal Mail.
Now Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has added his voice to calls for the Royal Mail to replace the post box.
He recently joined Wrexham County Borough Councillor and Chairman of Brymbo Community Council Paul Rogers and Brymbo Community Councillor Will Martin at the site of the former post box.
“I was contacted by the councillors after hearing about their concerns over Royal Mail not replacing a post box which had been damaged when it was hit by a vehicle in a road traffic accident,” said Sam Rowlands MS.
“I understand that the post box was taken away and now residents, many of whom are elderly, must walk nearly half a mile up a hill to post their letters.
“I have since took up the issue personally and contacted the Royal Mail.
“Despite a clear inconvenience caused to Brymbo residents, the Royal Mail have shown a concerning unwillingness to resolve this issue.”
In a joint statement, Councillors Paul Rogers and Will Martin said: “We have received lots of complaints about the post box being taken away and we share the concerns of local residents who used the facility.
“Obviously the damaged box had to be taken away, but we cannot understand why it was not simply replaced.
“We are calling on the Royal Mail to reconsider their position and would like to invite their representatives to a site visit to discuss this issue.”
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We understand the concerns of local residents and appreciate how important access to a post box can be for the community.
“In this case, there are six postboxes within half a mile of the previous location, including two less than 400 metres away – Ofcom requires us to ensure that 98% of UK households are within half a mile of a postbox.
“After taking into account the current level of provision and operational needs, we have decided not to replace this postbox.
“However, we want to reassure customers that postal access in the area remains well served, and we remain committed to providing reliable and convenient services.”
