Royal Mail Unveils 8 New ‘Covid Heroes’ Stamps Designed By Children

Eight designs have been selected for a new set of ‘Covid heroes’ stamps after school children were encouraged to create their own designs to mark the amazing work of the UK’s key workers during the pandemic.

The Royal Mail launched the competition for the budding young artists in April 2021 and asked the children to design a set of stamps featuring ‘heroes of the pandemic’. When advertising the competition, the Royal Mail said that they were looking to honour the following heroes: NHS staff, refuse collectors, cleaners, teachers, supermarket workers, public transport staff, delivery drivers and postmen and women.

They also wanted to commend the volunteers – such as Captain Sir Tom Moore – who helped in their local communities or raised money for charity.

The response was unprecedented. The competition – which was open to children aged 4-14 through school entries or independently via parents, home educators, carers and clubs – attracted more than 600,000 entries.

From this, a special panel of judges, including the Prime Minister and Baroness Floella Benjamin, picked 24 regional winners. The final eight winning designs were personally selected by HRH The Prince of Wales, with the finished stamps approved by Her Majesty The Queen.

The children’s designs include drawings that featured bus and delivery drivers, NHS workers, vaccine scientists and food bank volunteers.

The winners included:

1. Logan Pearson from Bury CofE High School, Greater Manchester

The 11-year-old wanted to depict the “science behind the scenes” and the development of the Covid tests and vaccines with his design.

        4. Ishan Bains of Abbey CofE Infant School in Nuneaton, Warwickshire

The seven-year-old dedicated his design to the UK paramedics. He had seen them called out on multiple occasions to tend to his late grandmother and felt they deserved recognition for taking her away when she was ill and returning her when she was better.

Speaking about the winners, Simon Thompson, the Royal Mail’s chief executive, said: “As we approach the second anniversary of the first lockdown, it’s fitting that the nation’s children have taken the lead in celebrating the heroes of the pandemic.
