It was claimed the issue had been ongoing for several months, with allegations that some parcels handled at the depot had been affected by rat droppings, urine and chewing damage.
Royal Mail has now responded to concerns about the reported rat problem at a parcel depot in Newport.
The issue relates to the Parcelforce Worldwide depot in the Maesglas area of Newport, where concerns were raised with the Argus about a reported rat problem at the site.
The concerns raised questions about potential impacts on both staff working at the site and customers receiving parcels.
The source who raised the concerns said they believed the issue had been ongoing for months and claimed it posed a potential health and safety risk for workers and the public receiving parcels.
However, Royal Mail, which operates Parcelforce Worldwide, said the situation had been identified and addressed.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “This is a localised issue which has been identified and addressed promptly through deep cleaning and specialist pest-control action.
“For staff and customers’ safety, we have temporarily moved our operation to an unaffected part of the depot.
“We have also held back affected parcels for examination and deep cleaning by a specialist contractor. They will be released to customers once it is safe to do so.”
Parcelforce Worldwide operates a local depot on the Maesglas Industrial Estate in west Newport, serving the NP20 area and wider Gwent for parcel collection and delivery.
The depot is listed at Units 20–21, Maesglas Industrial Estate, off Greenwich Road/Docks Way, with NP20 2NN as its postcode, placing it among a cluster of light industrial and logistics businesses close to the Southern Distributor Road and the docks.
Newport City Council said it was not aware of the issue.
