Royal Mail Working With Police Over Lorry Smash Which Shut Motorway

Royal Mail has said it is working with police after one of their lorries jackknifed on the M5 this morning, closing the motorway for hours.

The M5 northbound between Junctions 4 for Bromsgrove and 3 for Quinton was closed for hours this morning after the lorry crashed, damaging a lamppost and spilling diesel onto the road.

Delays of about an hour were reported after the crash, which happened at about 9.30am and the road had reopened fully by 2pm.

Drivers had been warned to avoid this route or to delay journeys which take them along the M5 between Junctions 4 and 3 northbound.

The driver was unhurt in the crash, Royal Mail confirmed.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We can confirm that a Royal Mail lorry was involved in an incident on the M5 northbound between Junctions 3 and 4 this morning. We are working closely with West Midlands and West Mercia police who are managing the incident, and apologise for any disruption caused.”

CMPG tweeted this afternoon saying: “A big thank you from B Unit at Perry Barr to everyone stuck in the traffic on the M5 today. Your patience and help is appreciated!

“We know the issues it causes you when we shut a motorway. We know it’s frustrating and you have little information. We don’t take it lightly.

“This was a complex incident with a lot of issues. It’s difficult to get across all that goes on but it took a lot of staff and co-ordination. It does means stopping metal boxes zipping along at motorway speeds. Everything for us is about removing risk and hazards.

“That means we have to stop everything to make it safe, and it takes time to resolve. Thank you for your patience and support today.”
