It’s getting close to the festive season. Black Friday continues its morph from one day to a month, and if there’s one thing we are all reliant on, it’s that the parcels we order online actually arrive as advertised.
But which company to sink your trust in? Does Amazon always ace it? Will Evri exceed expectations? Does DPD deliver the goods? Can Yodel, er, can’t think of anything beginning with Y to continue this alliteration extravaganza, but you get my point.
A recent survey by Citizens Advice found that it was in fact good old Royal Mail who top scored when it came to reliable parcel deliveries. I, however, beg to differ.
You rarely get a chance to choose the delivery company when you order something, so you are in the lap of the gods when it comes to the firm entrusted to deliver your package of choice.
You would think, however, that Royal Mail, the big daddy of British delivery systems, would be a safe pair of hands.
Yes, it seems to only deliver the post in my neck of the woods every other day, yes, expecting a first class delivery to arrive the following day is akin to expecting England to play it safe in a Test match, but it is, so says this survey, the top dog.
But, dear reader, for three packages in a row now – all coming from different companies – it has managed to, how can I put his politely, balls up the express delivery I’ve shelled out extra for.
So, for example, a Royal Mail 48 tracked package (which as the name suggests, should arrive within two days) heading to the sun-drenched district of Thanet ended up being sent to Gravesend instead. I got an apology email.
It took, for reasons beyond me, a further three days to then get it back to their Medway distribution hub. Heaven knows when I’ll actually get the thing. I ordered it well over a week ago.
Another day, another package and another email saying ‘sorry, we’ve accidentally sent your package to Dover’. Grrrr.
Yet the pièce de résistance was yet to come. Another package (can you tell I’m buying gifts during the sales?), another apologetic email. This time, they excelled themselves.
They had not diverted my package accidentally to the wrong corner of Kent, but the wrong corner of the UK.
It had somehow ended up in Truro. That’s Cornwall. Not even close.
To be honest, I find Evri ever reliable. Amazon is amazing. DPD a delight. The Royal Mail? Really ruddy hopeless.
