Royal Mint rarest 50p coins called ‘gems’ by coin experts

The 50 pence piece has become the most valued and collected coin in the UK, with many collectable designs appearing on its heptagonal canvas.

Its 27.5mm diameter makes it the largest of any British coin, and allows space for decorative pictures. It has often been used to celebrate big events over the past 50 years of British history.

Now experts have raised awareness of two 50p coins that are particularly valuable to coin collectors, the Kew Gardens 50p and the Atlantic Salmon 50p.

They are the Royal Mint’s rarest 50p coins, with just 210,000 and 200,000 copies of each coin entered into circulation.

Expressing the value of the Kew Gardens 50p coin, coin expert Coin Collecting Wizard posted a TikTok saying: “If your piggy bank has a Kew Gardens 50p coin then you are holding a gem.

“The coin hit the headlines in February 2014 when It was revealed as the most scarce 50p in circulation. At the peak of its value, some coins were exchanging hands for hundreds of pounds.

“The Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew are a UNESCO world heritage site, which boast 4.5 acres of garden under glass.

“One of the buildings is the Chinese Pogoda, built in 1761, which features on the design of this coin.

“A circulated version of the 50p coin can easily sell for £150 today.”

Talking about the even rarer Atlantic Salmon 50p, they added: “The Royal Mint has now revealed that the Atlantic Salmon 50p is the rarest 50p out there with only 200,000 released to UK banks and post offices.

“This is an exciting day in the world of coin collection as the Atlantic Salmon coin takes the crown from the Kew Gardens 50p.

“The Atlantic Salmon 50p is the most sought after 50p in circulation. The coin has already started to gain traction on the likes of eBay and coin groups and the price is sky rocketing.”
