A special festive 50p coin featuring the Raymond Briggs classic Christmas character The Snowman has been unveiled by the Royal Mint – and it’s sure to rapidly become a collectors’ item.
The coins have been issued to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the story and is just the second Christmas 50p ever issued in the UK.
Last year’s 50p Snowman edition was a huge success – with the silver proof selling out on day one – and has prompted this new edition.
A Royal Mint spokesman said: “Taking inspiration from the original hand-drawn book illustrations, The Royal Mint has worked in partnership with award winning illustrator Robin Shaw and Snowman Enterprises to create this special coin.”
The Snowman has, in fact, featured on other coins – just not UK wide.
It has been the image on a number issued on the Isle of Man and one 2003 version, featuring James and the Snowman, recently sold for £250.
The latest coin will not be entering circulation so it will remain a collector’s piece.
