Sarah Murray to attend Westminster training programme

Sarah Murray, who represents the St Nicholas ward, has been selected to take part in the UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme.

This is a national initiative designed to strengthen young people’s understanding of democracy and civic participation.

The programme brings together educators from across the United Kingdom for an intensive three-day residential course at Westminster.

Participants will observe debates in the House of Commons and House of Lords, meet MPs and parliamentary staff, and develop new approaches for engaging young people with politics and public life.

Cllr Murray said: “I’m proud to have been selected for this programme. Democracy only works when people feel informed, confident and able to participate.

“Supporting young people to understand how decisions are made – and how they can influence them – is something I care deeply about both as an educator and as a councillor.”

The Liberal Democrat councillor plans to use the programme to develop new youth-focused workshops, debates and community engagement activities, helping young people feel more connected to democratic processes and public life.

She hopes the experience will lead to greater opportunities for young people in Worcester to build confidence, develop communication skills and feel empowered to take an active role in their communities.

“Encouraging young people to engage with democracy promotes a culture of belonging,

understanding and feeling that your voice matters,” added Cllr Murray.

The UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador Programme runs from February 2-4 and includes 65 teachers from across the UK.

Cllr Murray recently spoke out about postal delays in Warndon Villages after being “inundated” with complaints about missing letters from residents.

She said it wasn’t acceptable that people were “missing hospital letters, getting test results late and waiting far too long for replacement bank cards and other important documents”.

Worcester MP Tom Collins also said he was “deeply unsatisfied” with answers he’d received from Royal Mail on the matter.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said mail deliveries were continuing as normal in the area.
