Scarce U.S. Prexie color variety, rare Bolivia airmail invert error in Nov. 4-5 Cherrystone auction

By Charles Snee

Cherrystone Philatelic Auctioneers will tempt bidders with more than 1,400 lots of United States and worldwide stamps and covers during an Nov. 4-5 sale at its gallery in Teaneck, N.J.

The two-day auction will take place in four parts, with sessions each day at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

According to Cherrystone, the auction will open with United States stamps and covers. There will be numerous rarities and stamps with graded certificates.

“There are collections of European Countries, British Commonwealth, South and Central American countries, Marty Farber’s collection of France, [and] strong Poland,” Cherrystone said. “As always, there are 200+ large lots and collections, ranging from single country albums to specialized collections, multi-carton worldwide properties and excellent Postal History lots.”

During the leadoff session on the morning of Nov. 4, a scarce United States color variety will come up for bids: a mint, never-hinged plate number block of four of the 30¢ deep blue Theodore Roosevelt stamp (Scott 830b) from the 1938 Presidential series, which collectors commonly call the Prexies.

The normal color of the 30¢ Theodore Roosevelt stamp (Scott 830) is deep ultramarine. The stamp also is known in blue (830a), which is more common than the deep blue variety.

Cherrystone describes the plate block as a “[very fine] example of this rare shade” and notes that it is accompanied by a 2021 expertizing certificate from the Philatelic Foundation in New York City.

In mint, never-hinged condition, a plate number block of four of Scott 830b is valued at $1,850 in the Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps and Covers. That value is in italics to indicate an item that is difficult to value accurately because it trades infrequently in the philatelic marketplace.

Cherrystone is offering this plate number block of four of the 30¢ deep blue Theodore Roosevelt stamp with an estimate of $550 to $600.

The morning session on Nov. 4 also features a lovely mint, never-hinged block of four of the Bolivia 1924 10-centavo vermilion and black Aviation School airmail stamp with the black vignette inverted (Scott C1a).

According to Cherrystone, the block comes with an expertizing certificate issued in 2017 by Sergio Sismondo (1943-2023), is well centered and is in “post office fresh” condition. Each stamp in the block is centered toward the top.

The block is “one of only two multiples of any size recorded, from a total printing of fifty [stamps],” Cherrystone said.

A single of Bolivia Scott C1a in mint, never-hinged condition is valued at $4,250 in the Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue of Stamps and Covers 1840-1940.

Cherrystone lists this block of four of the Bolivia 1924 10-centavo vermilion and black Aviation School airmail stamp with the center inverted with an estimate of $4,500 to $5,000. As of Oct. 6, a bid of $4,500 had been placed on the error block.

Among the collections and large lots that will be offered during the afternoon session on Nov. 5 is a U.S. 1845-1972 collection of used and unused singles on Scott album pages.

Used classics include the 1847 5¢ and 10¢, a complete set of 1869 Pictorials, and complete sets of the 1893 Columbian and 1898 Trans-Mississippi issues.

Cherrystone notes that the collection includes dozens of stamps with certificates and has substantial catalog value. Overall, the condition of the collection is mixed, with “faults noted throughout,” according to Cherrystone.

Cherrystone is offering this extensive U.S. 1845-1972 collection with an estimate of $14,000 to $15,000.

The catalog for the Nov. 4-5 U.S. and worldwide stamps and postal history sale can be viewed and is available for download on the Cherrystone website, www.cherrystoneauctions.com, with online bidding options available through Cherrystone.

Information also is available from Cherrystone Philatelic Auctioneers, 300 Frank W. Burr Blvd., Second Floor, Box 35, Teaneck, NJ 07666.
