September cartoon caption contest winner teams up ballet with basketball

U.S. Stamp Notes by John M. Hotchner

For the second month in a row, cartoon caption contest entries have decreased precipitously. The September contest featured the 2000 33¢ Women’s Basketball stamp (Scott 3399) from the Youth Team Sports set of four (3399-3402).

Only a half dozen entries were received, a phenomenon I attribute to Linn’s having gone fully digital. Hard copy has its advantages. I know myself that I miss the ability to tear out a page for reference or to respond later to an offer.

I wish that Linn’s didn’t have to go this route, but the economics of the publishing trade these days make continuing print issues an unsustainable alternative.

This time no entries were received for the best philatelic caption of our contest, so there will be no prize awarded in that category.

We do have a clever winner in the nonphilatelic category shown in the box on this page. The winning entry comes from Leon Lutje of Kaukauna, Wis. He will receive a 13-week subscription to Linn’s (a new subscription or an extension).

The monthly cartoon caption contest has been a popular feature of this column since it was introduced in 1986, but participation is fading, and I don’t know if it can be resuscitated.

I’ll try one more contest, to be announced in the Nov. 11, 2024, issue of Linn’s. And then, based on the response, I’ll make a decision on the contest’s future.
