Sheep found drowned in river after being chased down hillside

Police are appealing for information after 11 sheep were found drowned in a river having been chased down a hillside in Carmarthen. The incident happened last weekend on land close to Alltycnap Road in the Johnstown area of the town.

According to police, a flock of sheep were “chased and driven down an embankment into a river”. Eleven of them were discovered by the owner lying dead in the water at the bottom of the embankment. Images of the deceased sheep have been shared online, some of which are too graphic to include in this article.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Our Rural Crime Team Officers are investigating a report of livestock worrying which occurred on grazing land in close proximity to Alltycnap Road in Carmarthen.

“The incident happened sometime on the morning of February 8 where a flock of sheep have been chased and driven down an embankment into a river and 11 found drowned by owner.

“Livestock worrying is a criminal offence and comes under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953. ‘Worrying’ is where a dog attacks or chases livestock causing injury or suffering.

“This isn’t just a threat to a farmer or land owner’s livelihood, it’s also a dangerous situation for the animals involved, and could lead to more risk if the animals get onto the road.”
