Shops and supermarkets closed on Boxing Day including Aldi, M&S and Iceland

Christmas Day is over for another year, which can only mean one thing – the Boxing Day sales have arrived.

While there will be bargains galore on offer across the high street, a few major retailers have decided to sit the sales out this Boxing Day and start them on December 27 instead. Whether you’re planning on hitting the sales or need to embark on an emergency trip to the supermarket to stock up on festive nibbles, it’s worth checking which shops won’t be open.

Stores including Aldi, Iceland and M&S have all shut their doors this year as a thank-you to their staff for their hard work in the lead up to Christmas, BirminghamLive reports. Here’s a full list of the big retail chains that won’t be open this Boxing Day.

Aldi – All Aldi stores will once again be shut on Boxing Day in a show of gratitude to staff. Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi, said: “Our amazing colleagues play a vital role in keeping our shelves stocked year-round which is why, once again, we’ll also be keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day as a thank you for all of their hard work.”

Iceland – Iceland confirmed earlier this month that all its supermarkets, as well as sub-brand The Food Warehouse, would close their doors on Boxing Day. Managing director Richard Walker said on Twitter that the move was “to give our colleagues a well-earned rest with their friends and families.”

Marks & Spencer – M&S stores will not be open on Boxing Day this year, and will instead welcome shoppers through its doors for the post-Christmas sales on December 27 from 9am. M&S stores director Helen Milford said: “It’s a busy time for retail so giving our colleagues Boxing Day off is a small thank you for their hard work delivering a remarkable Christmas for our customers.”

Waitrose – The majority of Waitrose shops will be shut for Boxing Day, apart from the stores at motorway service stations. The Waitrose website confirms: “On Christmas Day and Boxing Day, our stores will be closed with the exception of those in Welcome Break motorway service stations and Shell forecourts – some of which will be open 24 hours. “

Next – Over the past few years Next has spent the day after Christmas packed with shoppers hoping to grab a Boxing Day bargain – but this year, the retailer is set to kick off its mammoth sale on December 27 instead. However, the Next online sale began on Christmas Eve for any shoppers who want to start their bargain-hunting early.

Home Bargains – Home Bargains announced back in October that it would close all stores on both Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. A Facebook post explained: “We would like to thank all our staff for how hard you have worked this past year, and want you to relax and enjoy the Christmas break with your loved ones.”

Poundland – Poundland’s director Simon Wells announced earlier in the year that all Poundland stores would shut on Boxing Day. He said: “We really appreciate how hard colleagues work during the year and are closing the stores on the extra days over Christmas and New Year so they enjoy a well-deserved break with friends and family.”
