Six Postal Workers Fired and Disruption of Postal Services on the Wirral

According to the Communication Workers Union (CWU), six postal workers have been fired from their jobs at a delivery office on the Wirral. This comes after the suspension of 11 postal workers at the Prenton Delivery Office due to a dispute involving postal workers having cups of tea and coffee at two pubs during their break. The suspensions have caused significant disruptions to postal services in Prenton and Oxton since July, with mail not arriving and people missing hospital appointments as a result.

In addition to the six workers who were dismissed, one worker received a penalty and the outcome of another worker is unknown. Three suspended workers have already been reinstated. It is also reported that several postal workers who were not involved in the original suspension have resigned due to the situation.

The suspensions were related to activities taking place at the Caernarvon Castle in Oxton and The Swan in Prenton. The decision has received backlash on social media, with many people expressing their dissatisfaction.

Birkenhead’s MP Mick Whitley and Oxton councillor Stuart Kelly have criticized Royal Mail over the issue. Cllr Kelly called for the reinstatement of the suspended staff and emphasized the importance of providing a proper postal service to the community.

The disruptions in postal services have caused frustration among residents. Some people have experienced delays in receiving mail, including birthday cards and wedding invitations. Royal Mail has stated that missed mail will be prioritized for delivery the following day, but some individuals have reported not receiving important items for weeks.

The situation has caused inconvenience and raised concerns about the management of the issue. Royal Mail has apologized for the delays and assured residents that efforts are being made to improve service levels, including additional recruitment and the addition of agency staff.
