Six Postal Workers Fired Over Break-Time Dispute

Six postal workers have been terminated from their positions at Prenton Delivery Office in Wirral following a disagreement over having tea and coffee at pubs during their breaks. The workers, along with five others, were suspended in July after reports of them consuming beverages at two local pubs while on their break.

According to the Communication Workers Union (CWU), three of the suspended workers have been reinstated, and one has received a penalty. The outcome for the remaining worker is unknown. The dismissals, according to Royal Mail, were carried out in compliance with the organization’s rules.

Local residents have expressed frustration over delayed mail delivery, causing them to miss important appointments and invitations. Birkenhead MP Mick Whitley has previously criticized Royal Mail, while Oxton councillor Stuart Kelly has called for the reinstatement of the suspended staff. Councillor Kelly emphasized the importance of a reliable postal service for the communities of Oxton and Prenton.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail stated that the company investigates any alleged misconduct by employees and takes appropriate action in accordance with employment law and internal standards. It has also been reported that several postal workers, unrelated to the initial suspension, have resigned from their positions in response to the situation.

Oxton resident Joe Thomas described the atmosphere at the delivery office as chaotic when he went to collect his mail after the suspensions. He acknowledged the hard work of postal workers and viewed the suspensions as an exaggerated reaction, questioning the necessity of forbidding colleagues from meeting up during the solitary job of being a postie.
