Sophie, Countess of Wessex joined the Royal Family in 1999, following her marriage to Prince Edward – the Queen’s youngest son. The couple said “I do” at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and they were surrounded by friends and family, including Edward’s brothers Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, as well as his mother, HRH Queen Elizabeth II. They are now parents to Lady Louise Windsor, 15, and James, Viscount Severn, 11. It’s be widely reported that Sophie is one of the Queen’s favourite in-laws in the Royal Family, with the pair often being spotted out on royal duties together.
However, Sophie has revealed an awkward moment which took place between her and the 93-year-old monarch. What happened?
Sophie once revealed that she received a certain “look” during a state banquet at Buckingham Palace, as she couldn’t find her seat just minutes before the Queen was due to speak.
“I shan’t forget the look I got when I couldn’t find my chair and she was looking to do her speech,” the Countess joked during ITV’s documentary Our Queen.
As a result, Sophie decided she’d make a better job to look at the seating plan beforehand, adding: “I decided I might study the notes a little more carefully next time.”
It has been said that Sophie is the Queen’s favourite.
The Daily Mail quoted a royal aide 2016 who told the paper: “She is trusted and relied on by the Queen in a way I couldn’t say applied to the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Cornwall.
“She is like another daughter to Her Majesty, they are that close.”
Express.co.uk recently revealed how the Queen allowed Sophie to stay at the royal palace before Edward popped the question, unlike the wives of royals before.
And earlier this year, body language expert Judi James analysed their close relationship.
She said: “Shots of the two women together show them looking like friends, with Sophie adopting some relaxed, confident and down-to-earth body language when she is with her mother-in-law.
“After seeing her other children’s marriages end in disaster, the closeness could be seen as a sign that the Queen might well have sensed Sophie was good for her youngest Edward.”
She continued:“Sophie’s air of confident strength seems to have had a very settling effect on Edward too.
“He looks happy to have swapped a life in the theatre for the roles of husband, father and royal ambassador.”
