Sophie Wessex is the Queen’s ‘favourite’, royal insider claims

Sophie Wessex is the Queen’s ‘favourite’ daughter-in-law and is trusted in ways the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge aren’t, a royal insider has claimed.

‘She is trusted and relied on by the Queen in a way I couldn’t say applied to the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Cornwall. She is like another daughter to Her Majesty, they are that close,’ a senior royal aide told The Sun.

It is often Sophie who’s picked to travel with the Queen when she is attending church services at either Sandringham or Balmoral.

The Queen has singled out Sophie Wessex as her ‘favourite’ daughter-in-law, because of her calming presence, a royal source has claimed. Pictured: The monarch with Prince Edward’s wife at Royal Ascot in June 2019

Prince Edward’s wife, 54, wins the coveted spot as the monarch ‘finds her presence soothing’ and likes to be ‘completely calm before church’.

‘Who gets the backseat is also one of those quirky royal ways that signals who is in favour – for example Princess Anne may be staying at the same time, but how often do you see her in the Rolls?’, the insider said.

It is believed that the mother-of-two is now seen by the Queen as the Royal Family’s safest pair of hands, because her marriage to Prince Edward has lasted, while Charles, Anne and Andrew have all been divorced.

The Queen and Sophie’s close bond is said to be down to their similar interests, with the pair often spending Saturday or Sunday evenings together at Windsor, watching old war films and historical documentaries.

Sophie, who was brought up in Kent by a tyre company executive father and a secretary mother, is even thought to have convinced the Queen to watch The Crown – suggesting she might enjoy the Netflix series which is based on her reign.

The close relationship is a far cry from the turmoil that followed the countess early on in her marriage, when she was still running her own public relations consultancy.

A ‘royals for hire’ storm was sparked after she posed beside a Rover 75 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, having secured a £250,000 contract to publicise it.

But Sophie’s determination saw her take on full-time royal duties, and embrace rural pursuits beloved by the royals, such as riding, fishing, shooting game and carriage driving.

Last month it was revealed that the Queen had ‘earmarked’ Sophie to be a ‘secret ally’ to the Duchess of Sussex.

Speaking to Grazia, a source said:  ‘The Queen likes the idea of Sophie being an unofficial mentor to Meghan.

‘Sophie is often at Windsor taking the kids riding on the Queen’s horses and playing at the castle. It’s a quiet lifestyle, very much the kind Harry and Meghan want for their little one.’

According to the magazine, the two Duchesses get on particularly well, after spending time at Royal Ascot together last year.

The match is said to be a particularly ideal, as both women come from having successful careers, and are keen to raise their children private lives with a plethora of outdoor activities.
