Sophie’s choice! The £475 royal accessory that Kate, Zara and Beatrice have all been clutching too…

Anya Hindmarch’s must-have accessories have been spotted on numerous members of the Royal Family, from the Princess of Wales to the Duchess of Sussex.

Among these, the Maud clutch stands out as a firm favourite.

Handmade in London using traditional techniques, this exquisite clutch can be personalised with an embroidered monogram or a hidden message, making it an alluring choice for any woman.

The British Royal Family has showcased seven iterations of Anya Hindmarch’s coveted Maud clutch, ranging from the blush pink satin version to a gold woven leather bag.

It all began in 2010 when Sophie, then the Countess of Wessex, carried a bespoke silver version at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden.

Sophie’s gleaming leather clutch beautifully complemented her dazzling Anthemion tiara, Amanda Wakeley gown and LK Bennett heels.

Since then, this £475 bag has become a staple at royal events, with Kate, Zara, Eugenie and Beatrice carrying the coveted design in ivory, beige and blush pink satin.

Following the success of the original design, the company introduced the Maud Tassel clutch, which has a different clasp and is slightly larger.

A bespoke service is available for both variations, allowing customers to choose the exact fabric, frame and clasp as well as personalise the bag to create a one-of-a-kind product.

Over the years, this iconic bag has made appearances at many significant events, notably at the State Banquet for the President of the Republic of Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, at Buckingham Palace in November 2023.

Interestingly, both Kate and Sophie, who are said to share a strong friendship, carried Maud clutches.

Meanwhile, Kate grasped an off-the-peg version in ivory satin, featuring a gold frame, dainty pearl clasp, detachable chain strap and lavish suede-lined interior. Crafted using tightly woven thread to produce a glossy appearance, this bag is the perfect size for carrying essentials, holding a phone, purse and make-up products with ease.

It marked the tenth time Sophie had used her beloved bag, before recycling it for another State Banquet in June, held for Emperor Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako of Japan.

Similarly, it wasn’t Kate’s first outing with her bag, and she has also carried another version, made of black satin, on 11 occasions.

The Princess debuted this design in May 2011, notably taking it on her royal tour of Canada with Prince William the following month.

Meanwhile, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are particularly fond of the white woven leather tassel Maud, having reached for the design multiple times this year.

Beatrice, for instance, carried the clutch during a Buckingham Palace garden party, pairing it with a charming crimson Beulah London dress and Jennifer Chamandi pumps.

Eugenie used the same bag for the society wedding of the year – the Duke of Westminster and Olivia Henson’s – in June, and again at Royal Ascot.

Unsurprisingly, their cousin Zara Tindall’s coveted collection of bags includes several Maud clutches, too.

In June, she set a trend with a gleaming gold version, which was brand new for Anya Hindmarch’s spring/summer 2024 collection.

Handmade from luxurious woven leather, this petite bag featured the trademark gold-tone frame, tasselled clasp and detachable chain strap. It’s no surprise that it sold out and is no longer available to buy.

This design has since been replaced with a metal mesh version, offered in gold or silver, which is ideal for the festive season.
