Sorting office worker denies Exeter rape

A Royal Mail worker has denied raping a woman who was allegedly attacked in the street near Exeter University in November.

Romanian born Gheorghe Bertlef pleaded not guilty to one count of rape and one of attempted rape when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

Sorting office worker Bertlef, aged 31, of Pinhoe Road, Exeter, is alleged to have carried out both offences against the same complainant near Hoopern Street, Pennsylvania, on November 13 last year.

Judge David Evans remanded him in custody pending a trial at Exeter Crown Court on May 11.
