Three Spalding and two Holbeach bowlers were in the Lincolnshire team which won the Walker Cup (inter-county double rink) at the national championships at Leamington Spa on Sunday.
Royal Mail Cart’s Ruby Hill and Chelsea Tomlin, Carter’s Park duo Annie Dunham and Louise Catchpole, and Castle player Lucy Cooke helped the county to only their third success in the competition – and their first since 2000.
The morning’s semi-final was always close against a strong Oxfordshire team. However, Lincolnshire finished the stronger and eventually won comfortably by ten shots. Their opponents in the final were Northamptonshire who required an extra end to win their semi-final against Wiltshire.
In the final, Lincolnshire started exceptionally well to open up between a ten and 15-shot lead. However, they were required to hold off a spirited fightback by Northamptonshire to eventually close out the final and win by five shots.

Final – Lincolnshire 37 Northamptonshire 32 (Catchpole, Cooke, Strong and Dunham lost 20-21; Cullum, Hill, Tomlin and Gowshall won 17-11).
Holbeach USC’s Terry Crane and Sandra Hammond won their senior mixed pairs first-round match in the EBF national finals at Skegness this week.
Representing Lincolnshire, the duo beat Derbyshire’s E Haddon-Holmes and B Ball 18-14 on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, it was the end of the road for six Spalding-based players representing the county.
In the Stoddard Trophy (two-bowl rinks), Royal Mail Cart’s Paul Caress, Ashley Caress and Martin Spencer were beaten 22-16 by Norfolk in the first round.
Spalding Town players Wayne Phoenix, Adrian Field and Jordan Philpott suffered a walkover defeat by Derbyshire in the three-bowl rinks.
