Southampton residents throw jubilee party in Franklyn Avenue

Southampton residents spilled out into the streets at the weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Family and friends gathered in Franklyn Avenue, Sholing, to share food and drink during the once in a lifetime event.

Party-goers took out their deckchairs and caught up with their neighbours while feeling blessed with “perfect weather”.

The festivities on Saturday were organised by friends Kavita Brown and Luke Wiltshire.

Both of them moved to the area about a year ago.

Kavita told the Daily Echo: “Me and Luke kind of got our heads together and thought “why not host a street party”.

“We asked residents if they wanted to come together and celebrate the Jubilee.

“We wanted to break down the barriers and get the community spirit going.

“We’ve never done anything like this before.

“There is going to be lots of food, alcohol, music and everyone is here to share, celebrate and get to know their neighbours.”

Luke added: “We moved down here over a year but some of the people down this road have been living here for forty years. I think the street party is a nice opportunity to get together.”

Many houses on Franklyn Avenue were decorated with Union Jack flags.

Some revellers even donned masks of the royal family.

Gayle Littlefield has lived in Sholing for 19 years with her husband and two sons.

The couple helped prepare food for the guests.

Gayle said: “We are feeling great today.

“There are lots of us living on this road, so I am glad we all worked this one out.

“Many of us are working and so busy that we don’t get a chance to do this as a community and get together. I think this is absolutely fantastic.”
